Day 285 – 292: Stargate & Space Pirate Double Bill!

Day 285
minijaffacakesThe Gauo’uld, Goaul’d, G’ould, Heretics return, this time with ornate beast helmets and heavier armour. Looks like the Jaffa want to bring in their elite troops. The Imperials keep the interlopers under close surveillance as they prepare their defences.

Day 286

jaffa fightThey attack just before dawn.  As usual, a team of close combat specialists sprint forward to disrupt the Imperial line. They do not last long; the Imperials have faced worse. The remaining elite troops take cover around the doorway, blasting at the defenders.

jaff losing fightAs the alien sun creeps over the horizon, many of the heretics witness only a few seconds of their last ever day. Within minutes they are dead or impaired. Victory to the Imperium!

overflowing prisonsAs ever, war makes for plentiful ‘converts’. Archbishop Stephen goes to work lamenting the injured for their sins, even as they are being patched up by harassed-looking surgeons.

Day 291

pirates againA huge pirate raiding force drops into the northern countryside and prepares for an assault. Eager for revenge, the Imperials hurry to their weapons. They have been busy the past few days; the countryside is awash with fortified turrets!

manning the gunsCraig orders an artillery barrage. Downs picks a couple of troopers to assist and the guns begin to sing.

Day 292

south pirates injuredThe pirates begin their advance at dawn. The guns took their toll overnight, but there are more than enough fighters left. They split into two groups, with the main force moving around the walls to attack from the South. Had they been hoping to catch the defenders by surprise, they were sorely mistaken. The bunkers pepper the army with streams of gunfire. By the time they reach the gatehouse, barely any remain.

north pirates injuredThose in the north suffer even worse. A pile of bodies builds up in front of the gatehouse entrance as the guns focus in on the entrance. Not a single pirate passes the wall.

run piratesThe main force in the south succeeds in breaking through the outer gate, but it is a futile effort. As the door crashes down they are hit with a wall of lasfire. The few remaining pirates break and flee on both fronts. This serves to only bring them back through the gauntlet of machine guns.

bunkers chasingRaiders drop one by one as the unblinking sensors demonstrate their unnerving accuracy. Soon the countryside is littered with the dead and injured. The Imperials head out to drag back prisoners and strip the bodies.

too many priosnThis has left the prisoner population rather severe. Several Imperials are evicted from their bunks to make room for the crowded convicts. They grumble, but it’s all for the greater good; More manpower means greater strength. Construction of the Inquisitor’s tomb is advancing rapidly thanks to all these new slaves citizens.

Day 282: Tyranids!

Day 282

gross antsScanners detect an unusual structure forming to the West. Scouts discover a dirt hive pouring forth an endless stream of tiny, multi-limbed Xenos. Tyranids!!! This heresy must be purged with great haste!

ant bustersPhill gathers a team of agents (as well as a Guardsmen in case someone needs to sacrifice themselves),

chatting whislt bug blastingAnd so begins a rather lesisurely massacre, as the team stands around chatting whilst annihilating the small creatures. Unsure of what to do about the nest itself, they shrug and just begin emptying their magazines into it. That generally works.

hill deadVictory! the Imperials mop up the few survivors and head on out. The heresy has been cleansed… for now. The agents will have to keep an eye on things. Once an infestation occurs, it can spring up again quickly if not monitored.

Day 268 – 281: Picking up the Pieces

Day 268

Phill newhand craig new leg

In the days following the Inquisitor’s death, the colony painfully sets official mourning aside to concentrate on the critical issue of repairing the damage from the battle. First of all, Phill requires a new hand. Being without his right thumb is making his aim terrible, so he replaces the entire hand with an advanced bionic replacement. Craig is also in need of a new foot, as the sight of him slowly hobbling about on the bandaged stump is bumming everyone out. Without a spare foot to hand, Luke decides to simply take off the entire left leg during the surgery and simply replace it with a Mechanicus manufactured robotic one. The general probably wont mind.

Day 270

busy prisonThe process of hauling the masses of captured weaponry and equipment is long and painstaking, as is the attempts to convert the many captives. An entire bunkhouse is converted to act as a makeshift second lockup. Stephen goes to town with his Holy Whip of Penance, cracking inmates around the back and face until they start realising that the Emperor’s pissed and they’ve got some making up to do. Eventually this begins to pay off as prisoners slowly convert to the righteous cause. A good thing too; all these extra mouths have been eating into food reserves…

Day 277

delicious cratesPlans are finalised for Kev’s funeral; the Cathedral will be completed and sanctified and the funeral will be its first true service. Alongside this, a huge marble tomb will be constructed deep in a mountain. This will act as both the final resting place of the Inquisitor as well as an eternal shrine to his legacy. It will be a huge project, but one that the citizenry embrace with righteous devotion.
Later that evening, James has a sudden vision of crates….

Day 279

mining orderCraig’s near-space Vox station picks up signals from a passing mining ship. Bribed with a hefty quantity of Imperial silver, they offload a vast quantity of steel and uranium to the colony. With these resources the Imperials will be able to greatly increase the efficiency and capabilities of their industries and infrastructure.

Day 280

snake cratesThe crates that had been hauled into the usual storage area burst open and piles of serpents pour forth. Everybody takes this as a bad portent and morale suffers another blow.

luke shoots snakesPhill orders the gatehouse to be locked up whilst Luke purifies it with his bolter. The new leader had briefly considered leaving the snakes in there as an added layer of defences, but the damn things are as much a liability to the defenders as they are the attackers.

Day 281

bit of a cryMany of the citizenry are deeply affected by the recent tragedy. An air of sadness pervades the dark shacks and thrumming manufactorums. The Inquisition, conditioned and experienced in dealing with such losses, does its best to console the population. It is clear that they need catharsis, and efforts to complete the funerary buildings is redoubled.

Day 263 – 266: The Martyr of Triumphant Light

Day 263

raider transmissionIt was wise of the Imperials to have a natural suspicion of peace; An emergency signal comes through the lookouts that a large group of Pirates are establishing a communications array… The second battle of the Great Pirate Wars is about to begin!

charlotte to nightWithin seconds the scanners are ring with multiple warnings. Large groups of attackers are swarming towards the facility. In the pitch darkness of night, it is impossible to tell the exact location of the command point, but the Imperials can tell the rough area. Kev assigns himself and Phill, Charlotte and Luke to the assault team. Steve, Craig, Sally and James are left to command defence of the base. As the majority of the team leave the north gate, Luke decides that he’s not doing anything till he eats and says he’ll catch-up. Charlotte, currently at the opposite end of the facility, takes a short cut from the south to RV with the others closer to the base. She heads out into the night alone, equipped with a set of sweet IR goggles she ripped from a corpse.

Waitingin darkIt’s dangerous beyond the gates. Besides the impenetrable darkness,  the first groups of attackers are beginning to reach the colony. The Inquisitor and the Stormtrooper take care to avoid any unnecessary firefights, slinking through the mountains and caves towards their destination.

Day 264

inthedarkrvAs you can see, pretty dark at night. The three agents finally meet up and begin their advance on the Pirate HQ. In the distance, they can hear the sirens and gunfire as the first attacks begin on the colony.

nightassaultlighninigCharlotte locates the command post and draws a bead on the nearest guard. Astonishingly she times her shot and the exact moment a clap of thunder rolls across the sky. A pirate drops to the ground, his head a bloody ruin. Lightning illuminates the scene as the imperials begin their night assault on the unsuspecting foes.

nightassaultshootingMuzzle bursts flicker across the darkened planes. In just a few seconds four more heretics are dead, but Phill takes a solid round to his right arm and gut in the fighting. The Stormtrooper ignores the pain and continues firing.

destroying the baseAs dawn peaks on the horizon, the remaining pirates break and flee into the distance, firing as they go. Luke pounds forward in his heavy armour, belches, and joins the agents in opening fire on the abandoned command post. Bullets and lasers obliterate aerials and listening stations. Soon the Pirates will be without any communication or strategy, halting their invasion in its tracks.

pirates in killzoneBack at the colony, most of the fighting has been occurring at the Southern Gate, but the first scouts moving in from the north increases the pressure by attacking the second gate. It goes about as well as could be expected; one dies as they burst through the door, sending the remainder fleeing for their lives. The few brave idiots that try to stand and fight drop in 3 seconds. It’s an easy victory, but there are far more inbound raiders descending…

pirate dropJust as all seems well, over half a dozen heavily armed pirates suddenly appear around the command post in a blaze of light. They open fire at exposed Imperials with heavy machine guns and anti-tank rifles. Phill bears the brunt of the unexpected attack as he’s hammered with bullets, many of them punching through his carapace. He begins to run back from the hail of gunfire, but a bullet catches his hand and his left thumb is blown clean off. The other agents have little choice but to stand their ground and keep firing, desperately trying to kill their attackers before they’re cut down themselves. “Where the hell did they get a teleporter!?” yells the Inquisitor over the roar of his bolter.

pirate fightPhill gets annoyed with retreating and turns to blast at the three men chasing him, killing at one instantly in a blaze of laser death. Luke punches his lightning claws through a heretic as Charlotte and Kev both keep firing. They too are taking injuries; the assassin has a rounds lodged in her chest and arm, Whilst Kev is bleeding heavily from a series of huge anti-tank hits to his power armoured chest.

fare well, KevThe heavy bore rifles continue to cause damage, a few even managing to wound the mighty Space Marine. Yet more pirates teleport in as the team’s guns begin to glow from the constant firing. Kev takes several more heavy hits that punch bloody holes through his armour. He bellows and blasts away the fools that fired upon him. Alas, his wounds are too grievous. Blood pouring from six anti-tank rounds in his torso, the Inquisitor drops to one knee and keels over. The remaining agents pour their clips into the remaining pirates, enraged at the sight of their fallen leader. The few pirates that survive the renewed onslaught try and flee, but the Agents cut them all down. But for the distant sound of battle at the colony, the planes fall quiet. The agents rush to the Inquisitor’s side but it’s clear there is nothing that can be done. He whispers for them them to complete the mission, before handing his Inquisitorial Rosette to Phillip. And then, with a last bloody cough, the Emperor welcomes him.
The Imperials pause to say a silent prayer, before turning their attention back to the mission at hand. They still have a job to do. The base must be destroyed. They send Phill back to base to see to his wounds, the bleeding becoming too severe to keep him fighting. Phill agrees. They don’t need to lose two Inquisitors this grim day. Charlotte demands reinforcements over the vox.

pirate fight 2Charlotte and Luke move back from the command post and keep watch from afar. It’s a good move as yet more Pirates beam in and begin attacking. Fortunately, Steve and Craig arrive with a swarm of Guardsmen.

retreatA bitter and vicious fight ensues. The Imperials are incensed and throw everything they have at their well armed foes. An anti-tank round blows Craig’s left foot clean off. He continues to stand on the bloody stump, swearing and firing. A guardsman goes down, his arm and leg shredded into ribbons of useless meat by intense gunfire. Steve takes wounds as he swings his righteous chainsaw into men’s faces. Soon the pirates are dead, but there’s no reason to think that more wont suddenly appear. The agents decide to evacuate and recover the Inquisitor’s body at all costs. All of them are bitter at this sudden cruel twist. They resolve to obliterate the place with artillery, no matter how long it takes.

artillery barrageThe team safely extracts and most are rushed into the infirmary for emergency surgery. The Inquisitor’s body is placed in the mortuary whilst the battle continues. There will be time to mourn, but for now the colony is under constant attack and its defence must take precedent. High above them, the first shells of the Imperial artillery barrage whistle through the dawn skies. They thunder out across the planes, sending chunks of dirt and mangled corpses high into the air. The Imperial artillery is extremely inaccurate and very slow to fire, but each shell is extremely powerful. It’ll be some days before the artillery scores enough hits to eradicate the command station.

Day 265

out into night againThe fighting is ceaseless. The guardsmen and agents take turns manning the artillery as the rest rotate between manning the guardhouses, providing medical care for the wounded, and clearing corpses. Only the most gravely injured remain in the infirmary long, most have little choice but to head back out onto the frontlines the moment their wounds are patched up. Exhaustion is beginning to take a toll. Sick of the siege, Charlotte picks up her rifle and heads back out into the night for a spot of cathartic pirate hunting.

Day 266

new foesThe pirates continue to launch attacks on the colony and teleport in fighters to reinforce their artillery ravaged command post. The ceaseless bombardment and Charlotte’s scope take their toll; The base’s destruction is inevitable, it’s only a matter of hours now. Getting desperate, the pirates airdrop in a huge force from the South in the hope of overwhelming the defenders. The Southern gate is lightly defended, with most able fighters either manning the thundering mortars or having their wounds treated from the last assault.

new force runningThe pirates burst in, their advance briefly derailed by the automated bunker. They immediately start taking heavy casualties as the internal guns chew through them. Many flee, but the rest charge to try and escape the killzone and slaughter the paltry defenders.

runniing piratesIt’s a bad move. The pirates are slaughtered and soon join their friends in racing for the hills. The new turret was a rousing success, dividing the pirate forces and proving very difficult to destroy. Expect to see a lot of the automated bunkers turning up very soon.

battle overThe pirate base finally falls. Charlotte watches through her sights as the entire thing erupts in one last explosion.  All that is left is a wasteland of blood-showered craters, discarded equipment and mangled bodies. Counting the death toll will be impossible since the artillery utterly pulverised so many corpses around the command post, but there are at least 75 visible across the area and in the gatehouses.  A further 9 languish in the prisons. At the least, the colony was outnumbered 7:1 over the last sixty hours.

The Inquisition agents must now reassess their situation. Their Inquisitor has fallen, a martyr of their holy mission. The facility is embroiled in a major conflict, one it could possibly lose. Many of the Agents are crippled and will need to consider the replacement of limbs. The stink of corpses chokes the air as the prisons resound with moans of wounded foes. They may have won the battle, but there is no triumph here.

Day 252 – 262: When Muffalo Attack…

Day 252

angry muffaloJames suddenly topples from his seat and begins gabbling some nonsense about ‘Muffalo.’ Everyone shrugs and goes about their business.

what happened in hereThe proximity alerts suddenly shriek out over the sound of chattering sentry guns. Charlotte and Downs wander over to find a room full of freshly harvested beast flesh. Tonight, the city eats well.

Day 262

weapon testThe relative calm of recent days has allowed for some major construction work to begin on the infrastructure of the colony. Wooden shacks are rapidly being replaced with Gothic structures of stone, marble and steel, structures designed to last millennia.  An eye is still kept on defence, however. An experimental automated bunker is constructed. This could provide some excellent forward defensive points… if it works.

Day 202 – 209: The Great Pirate War

*****Note: This should have appeared earlier, but since WordPress is  trash-poopy-head it’s languished hidden for awhile. Enjoy!******

Day 202

seedyvox

Using the Vox station to pick up on the chatter across the various factions on the planet, Craig discovers that a war has broken out between a large pirate band and a friendly local settlement. Worse, the pirates are planning on attempting to raid the Imperial city for war supplies. A force from the opposing settlement is moving in to engage them. This is going to get messy…

inbound piratesassistanceThe Pirates arrive in the south, whilst the settlers move in from the north.

pirate second waveallies second waveA second group of attackers appears from the the West! Luckily allies continue to pour from the North.

pirate fort

The Pirates are beginning to set up fortified artillery points! The Imperials begin erecting Mortars to respond to this new threat. The Inquisitor dispatches Charlotte (who grabs her trusty sniper rifle) and Phill to cause the besiegers some grief. The rest of the colony goes into lockdown.

pirates vs alliesYet another Pirate force moves in from the south, but to everyone’s delight a group of allies ambush the eastern force!

fighting factionsThe two sides begin to slaughter each other!

sniping pirastesPhill and the Assassin move closer, lining up their shots on the unsuspecting foes. A crack rings out as Charlotte’s rifle drops a man with her first shot. The enemy run in panic after just a few short but deadly seconds of sniper fire.

aftermathofwar

All that remains is blood and bodies. The Imperials scout through the aftermath and recover any survivors. It’ll take the colony several days to clear up from this, but at least there’s plenty of loot to scrounge from the bodies.

Day 205

ottomatic rageOttomatic, finally driven insane by his desire for a delicious meal of muffalo and strawberries, flips out and gets all punchy for himself. He tries to attack James who is spoon feeding an amazing looking ration pack to an injured convict (but is mostly just getting it all over the guys face and onto the floor). In a rare show of luck, his hysterical flailing misses the blinded psyker. Steve shows up to get holy on the rioter’s arse.

brownlee cuttingJames finally decides to join in with the brutal chainsaw thrashing, pulling out his pistol and blindly blasting about the place. By the time the smoke clears, Ottomatic is on the floor, one eye sliced clean out by Steve’s chainsword.

Day 209

ottomaticjoinsOttomatic finally realises that the Emperor gives awesome dinner to the faithful and rips the eyes from the unbelievers. It took a surprisingly long time to realise this simple fact, but he got there in the end. Also, the colony is out of white painted helmets so he’ll have to go without. You snooze you lose, Ottomatic.

Day 235 – 236: Skynet Returns

Day 235

mechanoid attackScanners detect another intrusion by heretical sentient machines. The colony prepares for the onslaught as the sun sinks across the horizon.

burning sentrygunsThe faster and lighter of the machines burst in and are immediately ripped apart by the sentry guns. One manages to fire off a single missile in its death throes, setting the left guns ablaze. Two Guardsmen, Stumpy and Me’ol, bravely pile over the parapet to extinguish the flames.

on fireBefore they can do so, the larger, slower machines crawl into firing range. As the guns begin to pour fire into them, they release a salvo of incendiary rounds into the gatehouse. Blazing napalm engulfs the two Guardsmen!

brave guardMore guardsmen bravely race forward. They extinguish the flames, rescue their colleagues and repair the guns all whilst under heavy fire. The Commander, Downs, is hit several times and is dragged to safety.

Day 236

exploded turretsThe fighting rages through the night and into dawn. The machines are as strong as tanks and don’t go down easy. They’re taking losses, but it’s a slow grind. Eventually, the right side guns explode in a shower of debris and destroy the protective wall behind them.

burnign gatehouse As the machines are slowly defeated, they let out one last salvo of incendiaries, igniting the entire gatehouse. A shell strikes near the sandbag emplacement, the blazing substance splashing Kev and Steve across the face. They put out the flames, and continue to fight on regardless. The final machine collapses and the Imperials rush to put out their fortification.

The injured are rushed to the infirmary, as well as several makeshift hospital beds. There are dozens of burns and bullet wounds, but most will recover without lasting injury. One of the Guarsdmen had his nose shot clean off, and Kev and Steve both suffered sever burns to their face. Both of them have slight damage to their left eye, losing about 20% vision each.

Day 216 – 223: The Helvetica Scenario

Day 216

jamesneweyeThanks to recent advances in the manufactorum, Sally has been able to craft a new eyeball for James. Kev does the honours of implanting it into the gouge where his left eye once was.

Day 219

experimentThe advancements made by the Techpriest continue to amaze. Sally orders the construction of a new experimental device that she claims will “Shear the earth asunder”. With a claim like that, how could they not construct it dangerously close to the colony for testing???

Day 221

solarflareA solar flare disables the colony’s power supply, plunging everyone into darkness. Hopefully nothing too untoward hap-

basicallyscrewedAh… shit…

Barak has a premonition. This isn’t going to be pretty. Panic breaks out in the streets as the entire colony stampedes towards the dubious protection of the darkened bunker. They can only hope that the radiation passes soon enough to allow the power to resume.

hidingdarkWith no chance of reaching the bunker in time, the shambling Servitors proceed to hide in the nearest available structures. The rest of the Imperials cram together in the bunker, the darkness horrifically impenetrable as the warp closes in. Someone begins pinching people’s arses and poking them, because there’s always one.

injured mokarServitor Mokar is the first to go down, his screams echoing across the silent planes. As the injured servitor is enveloped by the warp, the second servitor finds himself beset by shadowy assailants.

eemrgency lightJust as all looks hopeless, an emergency light flickers to life in the bunker. Could the Solar Flare have ended?

tiny survivedA ceiling lamp flickers on above the Servitor Tiny. The shadow demons scream and flicker away back into the warp conjured night.

just in timeAs the power grid slowly rests itself, the Imperials find themselves enveloped in glorious protective light. They’ve survived! Now there’s little to do but ride out the storm.

salvationfromdasrkThe warp disappears as quickly as it came, bringing what has now turned into an exciting impromptu slumber party, to an end.

blood stainAll that’s left of Mokar, however, is a huge pool of blood and an abandoned pick…

Day 223

serviceWith no body to bury, Steve instead conducts a memorial service in the partially constructed cathedral.

holeIn happier news, the experiment is complete! It has produced… a sort of crack in the ground. Cool, I guess?

Day 211 – 214: The Traitor

Day 211

Geshar traitor

So, a while back Gesh’ar briefly roused from his coma to declare his hatred for the Imperials. Everyone thought he was just wasting a moment of clarity by being a dick, but it turns he simply fell unconscious before finishing his sentence. Today, Gesh’ar awoke once more to say “…prepare to die!” He began typing into a hidden communicator lodged in his arm before dramatically emerging from the bed, immediately falling back into a coma, and landing back on the bed unconscious. Turns out he was never a Jaffa after all, but a double agent for some nefarious pirate faction!

enemy drop podsThe damage has been done. Gesh’ar broadcast landing coordinates for the colony and within minutes a shuttle raced across the sky and fired of several drop pods. The pods crash into the storage areas.

enemy eemrgesThe enemy emerges from their pods as the entire colony goes into high alert. Some prepare to try and bash their way into the partially constructed cathedral. Others race after one of the servitors caught out in the open.

axeserivotrfightA raider races towards the unfortunate servitor and smacks his axe into Tiny’s left arm. Tiny is having none of it. The servitor turns his pnuematic mining picks on the attacker!

kevraiderfightAs the rest of the colony scrambles to respond, the Inquisitor is first on the scene. Kev immediately starts beating a raider senseless as guardsmen rush into position.

deadraiderKev, Craig and a pair of loyal citizens beat the raider to death. With more Guardsmen on the scene, they move in to eradicate the intruders.

servitordownThe servitor is trashed by a raider!

medbay post raidersWith the battle over, attention turns to caring for the injured. Luckily none of the damage looks too permanent, except for the servitor who managed to lose a hand.

what to do with gesharAnd then, what to do with Gesh’ar? Now, there are a large number of Imperial citizenry who could really make do with some new eyes, organs, limbs, and the whatnot…

corpse artIt would also seem that the Imperials have taken it upon themselves to create some form of modernist artwork with the corpse pile!

Day 214

gesharhomesickGesh’ar is clearly coming to understand how dire his current situation is…

Day 191 – 199: Virus and Dinners

Day 191:

the plague

Plague sweeps through the colony. James, Steve and and a citizen find themselves covered in squishy black buboes. They’re ordered to go hang out in the infirmary till they stop spreading their gross cooties everywhere.

Day 198:

zombie fears

Luke decides to share some general concerns of his.

Day 199:

hungr ottomatic

Ottomatic has clearly been reminiscing about the majestic odours pouring from the kitchen during the founding celebrations. But Ottomatic needs to understand that naughty heretics don’t get to enjoy Michelin 5-star rated potato and rhino dinners.
